Pajuçara

Pajuçara is a beach and the neighbourhood behind it in Maceió, the capital of Alagoas, a couple of kilometres from the centre. A reef runs offshore and keeps the water flat, and at low tide the jangadas go out from beside the craft fair to the pools it leaves behind. A settler held a land grant here before the city was founded in 1609; the yacht club arrived in the nineteen-fifties. The ground hardly rises: a strip of sand and streets a few metres above the sea, with the tableland beginning only at the northern edge.
